Strand 3: Adapting the mixed-methods ASCOT tool for use in the community

The mixed-methods approach used for care homes (CH3) should lend itself well to application in private households. While there are clearly challenges, experiences from members of the team (in particular, development of observational approaches to measuring engagement of people with learning disabilities) and international collaborators suggest that the combination of the principles laid down in the development of the care home version and techniques from other applications should facilitate the evaluation of people’s social care-related quality of life (SCRQoL) using evidence from a variety of sources.

This strand of work would be staged as follows:

1. Initial development

  • Language in the guidance for ASCOT CH3 will be adapted to reflect the change in setting.
  • Additional guidance around the use of observation and gathering evidence in these contexts will be developed.
  • The results of Strand 2, which is developing the proxy tool, will be drawn on in revisiting questionnaires for relatives and care staff

2. Testing

  • The revised tool will be tested in a small number of settings, and feedback collected about the process from those involved.
  • If necessary, additional adaptations will be made and retested.
